At this stage your cube should resemble the one shown in the picture.
Surprise, surprise move 4 also uses an extension of "Move 1", in fact it is actually an extension of "Move 2". "Move 1" had 8 moves, "Move 2" had 16 turns, & to continue the two times table "Move 4" has 32 moves, but don't panic it is simply 2 times "Move 2", or 4 times "Move 1" This Move Rotates 3 of the 4 corner pieces either left or right, anticlockwise or clockwise. Turn the cube so that the bottom faces you, mentally or written, label the corner pieces 1 M
2 If you do the move starting to the LEFT with the M block then the corner pieces that will rotate anti clockwise are 1,4 & 2. So the bottom LEFT block stayed in its position, block number 3. The block that remains is the block to the bottom left or right of M depending on the way you start the move, left or right respectively. If you do the move starting to the RIGHT with the M block then the corner pieces that will rotate clockwise are 1,2 & 3. So the bottom RIGHT block stayed in its positions, block number 4. Once you have found the middle piece that is required for this move then you rotate the whole cube to the same position as for "move 1" and "move 2" with the chosen edge piece on the bottom row facing you. Then you use your "move 2" to move that edge piece to the right (or left), and back to its position, and then use "move 2" again to move the edge piece to the left (or right), and back again. This will have rotated the corner pieces to their correct position. THE PIECE THAT STAYS THE SAME IS THE PIECE THAT IS TO THE BOTTOM LEFT OR RIGHT, DEPENDING WHETHER YOU START THE MOVE TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT RESPECTIVELY. So you have to work out which three pieces to move in order to get them in the right order. This move is done with the cube in the same orientation as for "move 1" and "move 2". Look at the four corner pieces & try to find one that is in the right position, if there are two in the right positions then you need to do the move with any of the middle pieces. Remember that the orientation of the corner piece is not important so long as it is in the right position, similar to the middle blocks that we worked with earlier. Did you find one block in the right position? If not then see *** below. Lets use the figure below, let's say that block 1 is in the right
position & the present order of the corner pieces is The required order is as shown below 1 M
2 Then the blocks that have to be rotated are 2,3 & 4 (they have to be rotated clockwise). To do this the M piece that will have to be used for the move is M2, & the move will have to start by going to the right. (This will keep the number on the bottom right of this middle block (M2) from moving, namely corner block 1. ) Once you understand the above then you can do the move, remember that you simply orientate the cube as you did for "move 2", and move the piece to the one side and back and then to the other side and back. Please Note that you must now rotate the WHOLE cube back to the position you had it in when you were doing move 2. Don't be too hasty though because if you make a mistake then you have to get the cube back to this position before you can try again!!! MAKE SURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND WHICH BLOCKS YOU ARE MOVING & TEST TO SEE WHETHER THEY HAVE MOVED. Ok now for the actual move "Move 4". Remember "Move 2", put a middle piece from the bottom row into the left or right side piece in the middle row, & then put back the piece that you removed from the middle row. Now you just have to do this again WITH THE SAME PIECE, but to the right (left) hand side after you have already done it to the left (right). The important thing is to make sure that the middle piece that you are using, namely M2 in this example returns to the original position that it started in before you begin the second part of the move to the right, (or left). Remember that to rotate the 3 corner pieces clockwise, you start the move to the right, to move the 3 pieces anti-clockwise you start the move to the left. ***If no corner piece is in the correct position or there is always two correctly positioned pieces then do the move with any of the 4 middle pieces & this will move the corner pieces around so that only one of them is in the right position. Back up to the previous position. So to rephrase it just in case you have a frown
on your face. You need to move the middle block using "Move 2"
to the left or to the right & then you need to do "Move 2" again
using the same block, but this time putting it on the opposite side to the side
you chose first. Great page...I think that your method is the easiest one that I have found, but I'm having a lot of problems in the step 4 can you please, please help me out? If this is you then read through move 4 again, and again, and if you still need help then email me.
